Solasta: Crown of the Magister is a tactical fantasy RPG. The game is inspired by classic, tabletop role-playing systems such as Dungeon's & Dragons and is based on mechanics rather than an engaging storyline. In terms of the battle flow, the game resembles a bit the well-known Divinity: Original Sin series. It was developed by Tactical Adventures (founded by a former Amplitude Studios employee), an independent studio; this is their debut project. PlotThe basic campaign Crown of the Magister is set in a typical fantasy universe. Thousands of years ago, the elven empire of Manacalon was destroyed by a mysterious Cataclysm that changed the world beyond recognition. Rumour has it that an evil deity was behind it... Our team of daredevils is given a task to investigate the disappearance of one of the expeditions, which regularly venture into the ruins of the elven empire in search of powerful artifacts. The story itself is rather pretextual and does not take too much of our attention. MechanicsSolasta: Crown of the Magister is a tactical RPG, in which the action is observed from an isometric perspective. During the game we control a team of four heroes. We start the game from creating our team. Production offers access to several different races (e.g. humans, elves, dwarves, hobbits) and character classes (warrior, thief, cleric and mage). Each of them has different special abilities. We also have the opportunity to customize the personality and draw statistics. The game was developed to resemble as much as possible a classic, "paper" RPG. The developers from Tactical Adventures studio focused on the freedom of gameplay and three-dimensionality of the maps during the game we can climb and fly, which often helps to gain advantage over the enemies. The combat is played in a turn-based system, and success requires appropriate use of individual characters' talents. It is also possible to use environment for example knocking down columns or fragments of walls or destroying bridges. Other factors, such as lighting and character size, also play a role. We can use light as a weapon, but in doing so we also reveal the position of our heroes, leaving them vulnerable to attack. The game also lets you use small heroes to explore they can get to places others can't, which can be very useful, but can also leave a lone character vulnerable to death. Game modesIn Solasta: Crown of the Magister we can play only solo. The core of the gameplay is the story campaign. It is worth mentioning that the game gives the possibility to create and share our own campaigns with others. Technical aspectsSolasta: Crown of the Magister has quite an attractive, 3D graphic design. The designs of both characters and locations are kept in a rather classic fantasy style and bring to mind associations with, among others, role-playing game manuals (especially the already mentioned Dungeons & Dragons).
