Assault Rigs is an action game with simulation elements, developed by Psygnosis, a team whose portfolio includes a number of iconic titles, such as Lemmings, WipEout and Shadow of the Beast series. StoryIn Assault Rigs the action takes place in a distant future, in which conventional sports have become a thing of the past. Their place was taken by brutal competition in virtual reality reminiscent of the one presented in the famous Tron movie. MechanicsIn Assault Rigs we observe the action from third-person perspective. During the game, we sit at the helm of futuristic tanks, and our primary task is to collect crystals scattered over several dozen stages and eliminate everything that stands in our way from sentry towers, through other machines, to flying adversaries called Viruses. All this in order to get the highest possible score after reaching the exit from the level. However, it wouldn't be possible to achieve our goals if it weren't for an extensive arsenal of firearms apart from the basic gun, the devs also provide us with rocket launchers or laser guns; the whole thing is made more attractive by alternative types of ammunition, such as bullets bouncing off the walls, homing missiles or armor-piercing bullets. Not without significance is also the fact that as we progress, we get access to increasingly powerful tanks. Individual arenas are dotted with ramps, elevators or even switches, so there is also room for uncomplicated environmental riddles, requiring, for example, the construction of a simple bridge or moving a cube in order to unlock the passage to a further part of the level. Game modesThe pillar of Assault Rigs is the single-player mode where more than forty missions are waiting to be completed. In addition, the title has a multiplayer variant; PlayStation 1 version enables us to play in the company of another player (after connecting two consoles via PlayStation Link), while PC players are provided with an online multiplayer mode for up to eight players. What is interesting, the devs have prepared a separate set of stages especially for the needs of multiplayer tournament. Technical aspectsAs mentioned above, Assault Rigs brings to mind the Tron movie, which is mainly due to the three-dimensional visuals maintained in the characteristic neon style.High quality audio layer accompanies us during the game the title uses Dolby Surround sound.
