The game interface is an area where many recent space games seem to have had problems. We've gone to a lot of trouble to ensure that that giving orders in the game is as easy as possible, and accentuates rather than detracts from the game experience. Designing your own space jumping, enemy crushing starship should be one of the real pleasures of being a space tyrant. In RFTS, we've made the process easy, so that it's a procedure that you'll want to do. Every side in an RFTS scenario can have its own, unique R&D tree. Since sides in an RFTS scenario aren't restricted by licences or story lines, there are effectively an infinite number of sides, which means that R&D can never become stale or predictable. All space games do a reasonable job of managing production when there are are only a few planets, but these schemes do not scale well. By the time you have ten or more planets, managing production becomes a real chore. We have to say that the original RFTS also suffered from this fault. The reason why you explore, expand and exploit is so that you can finally move on to the extermination phase of the program. The place to do that is in the tactical space combat module. This is where your R&D choices will be put to the test, and your tactical abilities subjected to searching examination. Huge variety of species, technologies and scenarios.
